In 1995 The Camp Gordon
Johnston Association began the task of building the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum to
preserve the memory of the amphibious soldiers who trained and served in WWII, Korea, and
Vietnam. The CGJ Museum is now a showcase facility where
visitors to Carrabelle Florida can view first hand a pictorial history of the various
amphibious water craft, ducks, dirigibles, gunnery ranges, assault courses, bazooka
ranges, LST's, POW and POW Camps, Special Engineer Brigades, Command Amphibious Soldiers, Higgins boats,
LCM's, LCP's, and various other landing craft used
on the beaches of Normandy during WWII. Though sometimes referred to as; " hell
by the sea" or "Alcatraz by the sea" by those who served at Camp Gordon
Johnston, Carrabelle Florida has since become one of most popular tourist areas on
Florida's Forgotten Coast because it is home to some of the world's most stunning and
beautiful dune capped beaches, as well as being one of the Top 10 rated areas for sport
fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing and hiking in the areas many state and national parks.
In view of the recent events that
occurred on September 11th, 20001 there is perhaps no greater need to preserve, educate,
and promote the historical facts that describe the role that U.S. service men and
woman have played in making the United States what it is today. We invite all to
visit the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum while at the same time visiting many of the areas
wonderful resources. |
